Robert J. Serling Promotes his Alaska Airlines Book

Robert J. Serling, multi-award winning author and “Dean of Aviation History”, promoted his latest book at the UAA Campus Bookstore on June 18, 2008. Character & Characters: The Spirit of Alaska Airlines was published by Documentary Media LLC. The event was jointly sponsored by the Logistics Department and the UAA Campus Bookstore. The 90-year old Mr. Serling spoke of the numerous people he interviewed for his book and the stories they told; from the boardroom all the way to the ramp workers. He was joined in Q&A by Alaska Airlines’ Jim Johnson (Senior Vice President, ret.) and Barry Provorse (Publisher, Documentary Media LLC). Among his two dozen other books, Mr. Serling wrote the best-selling novel, The President’s Plane is Missing, which became a motion picture. He is also the brother of fellow-writer Rod Serling, creator and host of the legendary TV series, The Twilight Zone. This event was hosted by Dr. Darren Prokop and Rachel Epstein (Special Events Coordinator, UAA Campus Bookstore).

Prokop & Nolan Break CTRF Bison Cup Debate Record

At the 43rd annual Canadian Transportation Research Forum (CTRF; Fredericton, Canada, June 1-4, 2008) Dr. Darren Prokop and Dr. James Nolan (University of Saskatchewan) successfully defended the coveted “Bison Cup” against challengers, Dr. Mary Brooks (Dalhousie University) and Jonathan Seymour (Transportation Safety Board of Canada; and Jonathan Seymour & Associates Inc.). This third win in a row for “Team Prokop” is the longest winning streak in the 13-year history of this debate series. The debate resolution this year was: “This House Resolves that Canada Nationalize Air & Marine Ports”. Forty-eight hours before the debate a coin toss determined that Drs. Prokop and Nolan would argue against the resolution. Apart from their oratory, Drs. Prokop and Nolan credit their win to careful citations of transport history--- and a couple of old tales from the salty seas. The debate was moderated by Dr. Barry Prentice (University of Manitoba). Gordon Tufts (Manitoba Infrastructure & Transportation) was the official time-keeper. Drs. Prokop and Nolan will defend their championship title at the 2009 CTRF Conference in Victoria, Canada.

Prokop Moderates Second Annual CBPP “Sophist Salmon” Debate tackling State Corruption

On April 4, 2008 the CBPP Seminar Committee held the 2nd Annual CBPP “Sophist Salmon” Debate. Dr. Darren Prokop, who chairs the committee, organized the debate and acted as this year’s moderator. The house resolution was: “Unless Reformed, Alaskan Politics is Uniquely Prone to Corruption.” Arguing for the affirmative were Dr. Diane Hirshberg (ISER) and Dr. Lance Howe (Economics). Arguing for the negative were, last year’s winners, Dr. Lee Huskey (Economics) and Dr. Gunnar Knapp (ISER). Dr. Omer Carey (UAA Prof. Emeritus) served as the official coin tosser (deciding which position each team would take). There were many high-spirited remarks, rebuttals and pleas. Out of the audience, Dr. Pat Fort (Accounting) spoke in support of the affirmative; and Dr. Frank Jeffries (Business Administration) spoke in support of the negative. After all the dust cleared, the audience “voted with the feet” for the team for the negative. For the second year in a row, Drs. Huskey and Knapp were presented with the CBPP “Sophist Salmon” Debate plaque. They will defend their championship title at next year’s debate.
