Dr. William Easterly, author of The White Man's Burden, to speak on April 12, 2007 from 7:00p.m.-9:00p.m. in the UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 307.

Parasca Distinguished Speaker Series and UAA present Dr. William Easterly. Dr. Easterly is author of The White Man's Burden: Why the West's Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good. The book was named among the "Best Books of 2006" by the Economist, the Washington Post, and The Financial Times.

You are invited to a public lecture to hear Dr.
Easterly's talk on Can Foreign Aid End World Poverty? Dr. Easterly debated Bill Gates on this topic at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland in January 2007 and his views are considered both insightful and controversial.

Dr. Lee Huskey, Chair of UAA's Economics Department is the 2006 recipient of the Alaska Council on Economic Education's Howard A. Cutler Award. The award recognizes Dr. Huskey's outstanding contribution, over the past 20 years in promoting and improving the teaching of economics in Alaska's elementary and secondary schools. Dr. Huskey has taught economic education courses for thousands of Alaska teachers, co-authored a popular graphic textbook on Alaska's economic history, and raised funds to support economic education programs. The award is named for Dr. Howard A. Cutler, former Chancellor at UAF, who initiated the University of Alaska's statewide economic education program in 1977. The program is currently housed at UAA's Center for Economic Education.

As seen featured in the Alaska Journal of Commerce, UAA’s College of Business and Public Policy will host a roundtable discussion on the use of Arctic Airships in a variety of Alaskan industries. Possible uses that will be discussed for the airships include applications in tourism, fisheries, mining, and pipeline production. The discussion will be led by airship industry experts and will be held on Friday, Nov. 10th from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.. For more information, call (907) 786-1696.

Professors Bob Maloney and PJ Hill have organized a CBPP night at the Seawolf Volleyball game this Thursday night. Admission is free for students taking six or more credits who have their UAA Student ID. Free tickets are available for CBPP faculty, staff and part-time students. Tickets can be picked up in the CBPP Dean’s Office, Rasmuson Hall 301.

The game against Northwest Nazarene begins at 7 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. A CBPP banner will be displayed in a section of the bleachers to designate the section to sit in.

“The faculty and staff of the College of Business and Public Policy… would like to start a tradition of sponsoring a College of Business and Public Policy night at UAA athletic event[s]… It would be a great way to support our student athletes and to share an enjoyable evening with our students in a social setting,” said Bob Maloney in emails to CBPP faculty and staff.
On Wednesday, November 16th at 4pm in Rasmuson Hall Room 101 Sarah Palin, Candidate for Gov. will be our guest speaker.

Nationally Acclaimed Author at CBPP

Gen. William G.T. Tuttle, Jr. (Ret) returns to CBPP as the President’s Professor of Logistics. Gen. Tuttle arrived in Anchorage on Thursday October 13th and will be at CBPP through Wednesday, October 26th.

Since he was last at UAA his book, Defense Logistics for the 21st Century, has been published by the Naval Institute Press. It’s the first thorough study of the art and science of military logistics in 45 years and has been widely acclaimed within the logistics industry.

Events
The UAA Bookstore is hosting “Alaska’s 21st Century Military Advantage: A Dialogue with William G.T. Tuttle” on Wednesday, October 19th at 5:30 p.m. Joining Gen. Tuttle in the discussion will be:
Dean Thomas Case. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and following the presentation Gen. Tuttle will be available to sign purchased copies.

On October 20th Gen. Tuttle will moderate the policy roundtable “China: Challenges and Opportunities for Alaska –What is UAA’s Role?” sponsored by the American Russian Center. By bringing together the major players involved in Anchorage’s economic future as well as the decision makers at UAA, ARC hopes to provide a forum that will identify the needs of the community and recommendations on the direction of UAA’s future.

Gen. Tuttle will also present at CBPP’s Faculty Seminar Series on Friday, October 21st. His presentation will be on “Civil Service Reform as Related to the Department of Defense.” This will be held in RH 204 (formerly BEB) from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

Thomas A. Myers joins CBPP as the Director of the Business Enterprise Institute.
Alaska Center for Supply Chain Integration approved by the Board of Regents - will receive $6.75 Million through the Defense Logistics Agency. Partners with CBPP are Chenega Technical Services Corporation, Alien Technologies, Crane Electronics and Aerospace.
